Lepidoptera includes some of the most important pest species of agriculture worldwide. Failure to control some of these pests can have serious consequences on economics of food production. Although, a wide range of chemical pesticides have been developed for management of lepidopterous pests, search for alternative control agents is crucial with respect to the harmful effects of pesticides on environment, non-target organisms, and consumer health.
Biolep is a biological insecticide formulated based on the entomopathogenic bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki. The bacteria produce a crystal protein during sporulation that is specifically lethal to larval stage of Lepidoptera. Shortly after ingestion by the larvae, the protoxin is released following crystal dissolution and the toxin is activated in the gut environment, where it begins to break down the gut. Infected larvae become black and die within 24-72 hours after exposure. Biolep is an oral compound with no detrimental effect on non-target organisms, including natural enemies, pollinators, and human.
Biolep is formulated as wettable powder (WP) or suspension concentrate (SC) and can be used for control of various lepidopterous pests, especially for pests whose larvae, at least for a definite period, feed externally on plant surfaces. Biolep can be mixed with appropriate volume of water (usually 600-800 liter for one ha.) and sprayed over aerial parts of plants. Young larvae are more susceptible to the insecticide. In case of infection intensity or generation overlaps, repeat spraying every 7-10 days.
